Burcardo is the Italian name for Johannes Burckhardt who was born in 1455 in Germany and moved to Rome, to the papal court where he was appointed “protonotario pontificio".
He fell in love with this city to which he left his important library that can still be visited near Piazza Argentina in the tower where he lived. vIn particular, he is famous for his LIBER NOTARUM an accurate account of the life at the papal court in the Renaissance. He died in Rome in 1506.
